Welcome, friends! If you are just joining us, we are a group of teachers who love sharing some fabulous picture books and ideas! We like to share these ideas the month prior so that you can prepare ahead of time! If you want to check out my last post of a book you can use in November, head over to this post.
Christmas is my favorite time of year! Not to mention, we are expecting our first little one to arrive around Christmas, so it is making this season EXTRA sweet this year! The book I chose to share with you is one of my favorites, Christmas Around the World by Mary D. Lankford. It is a lengthy book and isn’t meant to read as a whole book read aloud. Rather, this book is perfect for helping students do research about a particular country and/or reading one country at a time as a read aloud.
In my class, I like to read a couple of the pages aloud to my class to begin to spark the idea in their minds that Christmas is celebrated so differently around the world. We have so many different countries represented in our school, so they love hearing about their own country and seeing themselves represented in the curriculum. Then, we begin our FUN research project! I let students pick the country of their choice that they want to research. Many of them choose the country from which they came from or their parents/grandparents originated from. Others just choose one that they have heard of or are interested in. Then, we head to the computer lab and begin our research! I, of course, allow them to use the Christmas Around the World book to do their research, but since I only have one copy, the computer lab sure does help! This website is PERFECT for their research. I bookmark the computers ahead of time! They take notes on the date it celebrated, the foods, traditions, a few fun facts, and the way “Merry Christmas” is said in that language. Then, they can copy their notes down on their scrapbook page. After all the students are done, I compile them into a class scrapbook. Some years I make copies for all students to have their own class scrapbook, other years I just make one class copy to keep in the classroom.
It’s so fun to have students share about their own culture and heritage!
